Uh oh

As we all know, the New Atheist community loves to paint Christians as “anti-women.” Also, they tell us the world would be a much better place without religion. I see. So that must mean the Gnu community itself is not “anti-women” and indeed is a much better place to be. Right?

But if that is the case, how do New Atheists explain “elevatorgate?”

What’s worse, much worse, it that it is looking like elevatorgate was just the tip of the iceberg. Back in 2012, the blog Friendly Atheist posted this:

There seems to be something that everyone is talking about, but no one is actually saying it out loud. It seems that are a number of “male speakers behaving badly towards women at conferences” and yet they keep getting invited back because they’re big names and conference organizers can’t afford not to invite them.

And in the last few days, this situation has become toxic. You can see for yourself:

Summary.

Carrie Popper tells all

What do you do when someone pulls the pin and hands you a grenade?

I don’t know what to believe. Reason and evidence fail us. On many levels.

If any of the front-of-the-parade wannabe leaders of what was once known as Atheism+ turn out to be guilty of this, man… that’ll be quite a thing.

I personally have friends that were raped, had family members suffered rape or attempted rape. I say that to convey that I consider the issue of assault and rape to be serious and it’s too near to my circle of people to not be concerned…

That said, I’ve never bought into the idea there is widespread harassment in the GNU community conferences for the simple fact it is rare to begin with relative to the reported frequency by PZ and friends. Harassment and assault and rape happen, but not every month, not every conference, and not with dozens being victim multiple times a year in the same community. How long can such a situation be sustained?

And if it is so dangerous, why the heck would a woman keep coming back to conferences to get more abuse???

Someone attempted to rape my sister, happened once in her lifetime, and my sister never reported feeling threatened or harassed since. I had a aunt who was raped. Happened only once, no reports of it happening repeatedly or any threat of it happening repeatedly. The assailant is behind bars now. Hearing reports of Rebecca Watson and sisters being assaulted and harassed numerous times conference after conference? Strains credulity that it is that frequent, imho.

A few atheist women who have been raped have complained that the narrative PZ and the feminists are putting forward smacks of fabrication and hype and that it insults those who are really victims.

Seems like PZ leaked the Shermer accusation since it was just the story he was looking for to prop up a false narrative and his declining following. PZ had a falling out with Shermer a while back. Seems Shermer is a convenient target.

Some mechanical considerations. A girl is at a conference and gets groped with everyone around her watching? Doubtful. Where can the assault take place? On her way to her room or something. That’s possible, but are there detailed reports of incidents other than verbal assault? Then we have photos of Phil mason hanging out in the bars with attractive women from the conference looking like they felt quite safe…All the real victims of rape that I know have rarely complained of persistent attacks and harassment. It often that one horrible incident, not every month, not every three months, not even annually…

I don’t buy the accusations. If the accusations are true its bad for the GNUs. If the accusations are false its also bad for the GNUs….

An atheist reflects some of my views which you can google:

    quote:
“Is anyone else following this? Fucking incredible. It all started with Karen Stollznow accusing skeptic Ben Radford of the Center of Inquiry of harassment and assault, then a former James Randi Foundation employee Carrie Poppy accused DJ Grothe, the gay liberal atheist president of the JREF, of misogyny and harassment, then the batshit lunatic Jennifer McCreight accused physicist Lawrence Krauss of sex assault/harrassment (she’s since taken down the details after receiving a legal notice from Shermer but you can still piece together the picture from the comments. (What was Krauss’ evil crime? Propositioning a woman for sex (possibly a threesome) while he was on a cruise for skeptics. The horror!), then someone from the Atheism + forum set up a Tumblr to accuse Bill Nye of harassment, THEN last night PZ shitstain Myers himself accused Michael Shermer, editor in chief of Skeptic Magazine, OF SERIAL RAPE.

What’s the actual evidence for all these accusations? Besides hearsay of the accusers of course, absolutely fuck all. Completely astonishing. All of this bullshit started a couple years ago with Rebecca -asking me out to coffee is literally rape- Watson’s elevatorgate saga and the deranged feminist crazy train took off from there. It is a horrible solipsistic cult and it is clear now that it is going to completely consume and destroy the skeptic community.”

Probably a little from column A, a little from column B. Atheism provides neither reason not to be a boorish harasser with no sexual restraint, nor reason not to be a brazen liar who falsely accuses others for attention and power, so both are probably happening at the same time.

  4. Crude says:

All I know is the thought of Bill Nye sexually harassing a woman… I mean, yeah, in theory that can be terrible, but in the abstract it’s really, really funny. Just picturing that guy with his bow-tie on and all those exaggerated mannerisms but his pants are around his ankles and he’s trying to talk a girl into a one night stand.

I’ve been reading various forums and blogs (from both sides) and I think you may be on to something. That, and it seems these atheist conventions devoted to “reason” involve large amounts of alcohol.

  6. stcordova says:

I have to correct something I said. I would doubt persistent harassment from several different men conference after conference, but I would believe persistent harassment by the same stalker. I accept Karen Stollznow’s account.

I think though, PZ by and large is crying wolf one too many times, and in the case of a real problem (Stollznow), he’s now hurt his credibility.

  7. Crude says:

Well, the alternative is that the atheist community is shot through with some serious sexual creeps, to put it mildly.

…and Sam Harris’ other paths to enlightenment, no doubt.
