Sam Harris Helps to Legitimize Popular Anti-Vaccination Proponent

Richard Dawkins is not the only Horseman to promote Bill Maher.

While Sam Harris doesn’t (yet) have a Sam Harris Award to hand out, he does have a personal “think thank” called Project Reason. Project Reason is about “spreading science and secular values” and it’s official mission is as follows

Project Reason is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation devoted to spreading scientific knowledge and secular values in society. The foundation draws on the talents of prominent and creative thinkers in a wide range of disciplines to encourage critical thinking and erode the influence of dogmatism, superstition, and bigotry in our world.

Devoted to spreading scientific knowledge. Encourage critical thinking. Sounds nice, eh?

Yet look who serves on the Advisory Board – none other than anti-vaxxer Bill Maher

Now just how sincere can Harris and his Project Reason truly be when he has a vocal anti-vaccination proponent (and someone sympathetic to the notion that HIV does not cause AIDS) on his advisory board?

The New Atheists leaders love to posture as if they are Defenders of Science. Yet Dawkins delivers awards to an anti-vaxxer and Harris puts the anti-vaxxer on his advisory board. As you can see, they are not quite as “pro-science” as they try to sell themselves as being. 😉

If Dawkins was truly sincere in his defense of science, shouldn’t he be working to rescind the Richard Dawkins Award? And if Harris is truly sincere in his defense of science, why doesn’t Sam Harris kick Maher off the advisory board?

More (and unnecessary) evidence that the primary motivation is anti religious ideology.

  2. TFBW says:

This is understandable. Given that Harris is a made-for-media scientist, Harris can help to legitimise Maher while Maher simultaneously helps to legitimise Harris. It’s perfect synergy.

Just a quick sidenote, I read today in the papers that the pope is going to give a speech in congress in september. This is going to be quite a show 🙂

  4. Bilbo says:

Has Kary Mullis’s claim that there is no scientific proof that HIV causes AIDS been refuted, yet?

  5. Bilbo says:

I guess NIAID’s website looks pretty impressive:

I’m wondering if and how Mullis and other doubters or deniers would respond to it.
