March for Social Justice Science

Check out this tweet from the March For Science activists:

Also:

At the March for Science, we are committed to highlighting, standing in solidarity with, and acting as allies with black, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islander, indigenous, Muslim, non-Christian, non-religious, women, people with disabilities, poor, gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, trans, non-binary, agender, and intersex scientists and science advocates. We must work to make science available to everyone and encouraging individuals of all backgrounds to pursue science careers, especially in advanced degrees and positions. A diverse group of scientists produces increasingly diverse research, which broadens, strengthens, and enriches scientific inquiry, and therefore, our understanding of the world.

Okay, they want to exclude Christians from there March, I suppose because the Christians control science and exclude all those “non-Christians” and “non-religious.”  Someone needs to inform Dawkins et al. who like to brag how most scientists are non-religious.

But that last sentence is most interesting.  They seem to be saying that scientific truth is dependent on one’s race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation. Hmmmm.   Looks like post-modernism is trying to absorb science.

    Are you misreading?

I looked at the text you quoted, which I didn’t see on the linked site, but maybe I don’t know where to look.

I read it is saying that non-Christians are welcome. You are reading as saying that Christians are excluded.

Yes, perhaps they could have worded it better. Nevertheless, you are reading a clearly inclusive statement as if it were rigidly exclusive.

    Click on the Diversity tab.

I read it is saying that non-Christians are welcome. You are reading as saying that Christians are excluded.

I read a long list of groups that clearly omits Christians. The message is clear – Everyone but Christians are invited.

Yes, perhaps they could have worded it better. Nevertheless, you are reading a clearly inclusive statement as if it were rigidly exclusive.

I didn’t say it was rigid. Just pointing out the simple fact that Christians were excluded from the list.

  3. Kevin says:

The white straight Christian “cisgender” male is the only demographic completely left out.

  4. TFBW says:

@Kevin: Not true. They’ll include such a person if they are poor or disabled. But hey, I get the idea: they don’t want my sort participating. Highly specific exclusion through a long list of includes.

  5. Vy says:

Oh come Neil, that is clearly stating Christians are excluded. Are you saying they were able to write out “Muslim”, “non-Christians” but suddenly had stroke-induced amnesia when it was time to type out “Christian”?

Someone needs to inform Dawkins et al. who like to brag how most scientists are non-religious.

I found this worldwide study on religious beliefs of scientists a few days ago directly contradicting that Atheist trope. Just read the comments and see the Atheists tripping over themselves trying to explain it, even going as far as claiming Ecklund had an anti-Atheistic (so-called “religious”) agenda because of his academic position.

  6. Kevin says:

“A diverse group of scientists produces increasingly diverse research, which broadens, strengthens, and enriches scientific inquiry, and therefore, our understanding of the world.”

Is there any evidence that this is true?

  7. Regual Llegna says:

“…acting as allies with black, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islander, indigenous, Muslim, non-Christian, non-religious, women, people with disabilities, poor, gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, trans, non-binary, agender, and intersex scientists and science advocates.”

    – balck (naming allies based on race)
    – Latinx (what this means? that do you not know the exact lantiamerican country they come from?)
    – Asian (I suppose the comunists fill this)
    – Pacific Islander (???, is the first time i read about someone calling those people)
    – indigenous (the orgainizer don’t consider himself a indigenous person from his own country)

    interesing:
    – Muslim (because the “religion of peace”?)
non-Christian (This includes every people on the planet that are not christians, includin muslims again)
    – non-religious (cognitive dissonance or double standar, this exlude muslims and more than the 80% of the people of the planet)

    – women (Of course a atheist man want women, know to feminist that gnus atheist are in fact sexists remenber Dawkins “Dear musolima”, if the person that is making this call were women she will call women first.)
    – people with disabilities (since gnus claim that religious people, including muslims, are mentaly ill but they encourage the mockering of people for their belief this make gnus in fact ableists)
    – gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, trans, non-binary, agender, and intersex(??? what this have to do with any science exept psicology of the feelings is beyong me)

    “… scientists and science advocates.”
Oh! they want scientist and scientific advocates that fullfil those PRE-REQUISITES TO ATTENT THE “MARCH”/ ANTI-TRUMP MARCH/ ANTI-CHRISTAINS MARCH / ANTI-HETEROSEXUAL MARCH.

“We must work to make science available to everyone and encouraging individuals of all backgrounds to pursue science careers, especially in advanced degrees and positions.”

He is implaying that SCIENCE tm is a sort of currency now and want especially advanced degrees (that simplay say that someone was educated in something like any degree) and positions (THIS ONE RIGHT HERE *).
    * THIS IS A POLITICAL MARCH, why they will encourage individuals of all backgrounds to pursue science careers, especially in advanced degrees and positions BUT NO ENCOURAGE INDIVIDUALS TO DO ANY RESEARCH A.K.A.”THE THING THAT MAKE A SCIENCE, SCIENCE”.

  8. Regual Llegna says:

    The bets:
1.- Who wanna bet that they sing the Muslim Call to Prayer in thsi “March” will waving Gay Pride Flags too? around the hipothetical 40%-50% out of 100.
2.- Who wanna bet that they talk about the “evil christians” in this “March” more than anything and talk a lot about identity politics and political positions of POWER too? around the hipothetical 60%-62% out of 100%

  9. Regual Llegna says:

    This women:

In my opinion, needed SHUT UP after THAT QUESTION.
    * Or at least say something that show us that she have concern for her childer and grandchildern (“grandchildern” she is an advocate for Abortions “rights”)

I don’t know nothing about her, but i bet that she is a humanist-atheist that sell herself at the general public as a christian.

  10. Regual Llegna says:

The answer to my last comment is:

YEAH! THAT WOMEN SELL HERSELF TO THE PUBLIC AS AN “DEVOUT CATHOLIC”, did she is not a abortionist for women rights.

  11. Regual Llegna says:

I forgot the ? on the last sentence.

  12. unclesporkums says:

They are BEYOND parody at this point. It’s always been about politics to them.

  13. itsonlyphotos says:

Is it just me or does anyone else think that there are a lot of people out there who want to associate themselves with science as a means of seeming intelligent?

  14. Regual Llegna says:

    itsonlyphotos says:
“Is it just me or does anyone else think that there are a lot of people out there who want to associate themselves with science as a means of seeming intelligent?”

    Yes!
But this claim about the SCIENCE is simply a need for advantage in their life:
Those peoples exist in every moment of the human history, they want to be associated to the group, the leaders, the stronger, the best, the superiors, the most civilized, etc… is the point in what this form of SCIENCE tm exist, no different paths or/and fields of study only a monolitic claim of SCIENCE tm, is the same that claim that you know a TRUTH tm and you are infallible in every way thanks to that thing.

Most of the time the claim to the monolitic SCIENCE tm “this info makes my smart than thou” is simply that info, unusable, in their entire life, info or raw data too variable to be studied and have nothing to do with any true life experience.

The claim about this SCIENCE is minimun in people who have a clear purpose in their life and almost non-existent in people that have a vision on the meaning of their own life, their own life not others people (mainly deeply unknown to them).

The more is the need for the, and actually extra and unearned, advantage the more they need those advantages to live in society without purpose or direction. Iin case of gnus that believe that “SCIENCE make me smart” but in fact what they really want, to believe/see in themself, is probabily “SCIENCE make me a better person (what they want to belief and the belief that they want to impose on others)… superior than all other peoples from the past and from the present (what they accept as inconditional truth, the past is bad every time with gnus)… what is in my MIND (really non-scientific/belief) represent the future every other thing is unnecessary or is replaceable and will be forgotten” (the final conclusion they had before they fall in a existential nihilism/narcisism or a wishfull hope about belief in a better future that have nothing to do with atheism at all a FAITH).

  15. Dhay says:

    > We must work to make science available to everyone and encouraging individuals of all backgrounds to pursue science careers, especially in advanced degrees and positions. A diverse group of scientists produces increasingly diverse research, which broadens, strengthens, and enriches scientific inquiry, and therefore, our understanding of the world.

Funny how that didn’t apply in the case of Francis Collins’ appointment to lead the NIH — as far as certain vocal, prominent New Atheists were concerned.

“A diverse group of scientists produces increasingly diverse research …” Hmm, that’ll be unwelcome to Peter Boghossian and his fellow Gender Studies haters.

  16. pennywit says:

This is why your typical nondiscrimination statement reads “We do not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, sexual identity, nationality,” etc., etc. If you try to list out all the groups who are “welcome,” you will leave out one or more groups, and they’ll start squawking about it.

  17. Doug says:

    @pennywit,
Exactly: by listing all the groups who are “welcome” you are either being stupid (not anticipating the inevitable squawking) or evil (intending the inevitable snub). Either option is bad news for folks representing “science”.

  18. pennywit says:

I think there should be a litmus test for admission, though:

“Do you believe the Cleveland Browns can win the Superbowl next year?” If you answer yes, you’re not allowed in.

  19. Dhay says:

    @pennywit
    I’m glad you contribute here.
    Dhay

  20. pennywit says:

Why, thank you. And, for the record, I do not believe the Cleveland Browns will win the Superbowl next year.

  21. Tim'L says:

Mike, have you noticed that there’s a large number of popular atheist youtube channels that are now more focused on bashing SJW issues than religion?
    Kind of interesting.

  22. listener87 says:

what about the queer Christians though?

  23. Michael says:

Mike, have you noticed that there’s a large number of popular atheist youtube channels that are now more focused on bashing SJW issues than religion?
    Kind of interesting.

If you run across any interesting ones, feel free to share them.

I think two things may be at work. First, many atheists may have figured out that the SJW crowd represents a larger threat to their way of life than religion. If religious people call Joe Atheist a sinner, Joe will laugh it off. If the SJW call Joe Atheist a racist, Joe could lose his job. Secondly, the SJ movement is effectively a secular religion. It must have been a shock for some of them to realize that while they have been busy hammering on old time religion, a new strain of religion has emerged among their ranks.

  24. Dhay says:

listener87 > what about the queer Christians though?

I wouldn’t attempt to guess what the March organisers might welcome or discourage. As pennywit suggests, they probably blundered in not using the standard formula.

But it’s possibly least discriminatory not to use any formula whatsoever: for example my own church (British, URC) welcomes all who will to worship and to ‘sit at the Lord’s table’ and take communion.

  25. Tim'L says:

    Hi Mike,
Channels like Sargon of Akkad, Undoomed, Atheism-is-Unstoppable, Armored Skeptic. Not that they don’t still do atheist videos… but the views they get off of doing anti-SJW videos is much higher than their more typical “Stupid Catholic beliefs” or whatever they may call the video.

  26. I guess they took the diversity page down? closest thing I could find to what you quoted is here:
