Atheist Unhinged

Atheist activist PZ Myers continues to unhinge as his atheist brain drifts closer than half way to Crazy Town.  Consider his wild-eyed, frenzied “proposals” for making the United States a better place:

Shut down 8chan. Arrest anyone who tries to revive it.

Criminalize gun manufacture.

Abolish the Senate.

Outlaw the Republican party. Throw its leadership in jail

Wow.  What is it with these atheists and their fetish about criminalizing this and that while putting others in jail?  The only upside to someone like Myers is that he makes it much easier for others to see the connection between Atheism and the Gulag.

I’m reading Myers’ article. So far this:

Until law enforcement, and the media, treat these shooters as part of a terrorist movement no less organized, or deadly, than ISIS or Al Qaeda, the violence will continue. There will be more killers, more gleeful celebration of body counts on 8chan, and more bloody attempts to beat the last killer’s “high score”.
There’s a radical suggestion right there. If there were an online forum in which Muslim terrorists gleefully shared tales of glorious murder, urged each other to outdo each other in suicidal mass killings, and celebrated every time one of these incidents occurred, the FBI would be all over it, tracing communications and working to arrest the ringleaders. 8chan, though, is fueled by the frustrations of disaffected middle class white men, so no, nothing will be done. It will continue to fester and spread its toxins.

    Does he have a point?

    Does he have a point?

8chan got shut down already I think.

  3. Kevin says:

PZ is a left-wing nutjob. Ideologically he is another shade of the same people who made the Gulag. So it’s not any surprise at all that he wants to destroy any opposition to his opinions.

Atheism is too indirect, I think. Far-left nutjobbery is a sufficient explanation of PZ’s lunacy.

In that case, did he have a point?

Atheists are inevitably totalitarian…the vast majority are Left and move steadily leftward over time…

  6. Isaac says:

Does it even register with him that all 3 of the recent shooters were atheists? Does he really have standing to rant against Trump supporters for fomenting violence here? As far as I know one of the shooters sort of supported Trump, one was a left-winger who hated Trump, and (correct me if I’m wrong) I don’t know of any political preference for the Garlic festival shooter.

Anyone ranting about “right wing” violence” is just a lost, clueless sheep at this point. Or “left wing violence” for that matter, although you’d be closer to something there, since something like 75% of violent crime is committed by people of that persuasion. Still, there is no consistent political ideology to these shootings. There IS a consistent worldview. Nihilism, postmodernism, secularism.

  7. Isaac says:

Bilbo: Does he have a point?

I don’t think so, not a well-thought out one. He is wrong about large numbers of mass shooters hanging out on 8chan. Some of them did, and I don’t have hard numbers here, but I’d wager that more of them used Facebook.

His main premise, that mass shooters have some sort of shared ideology, is completely wrong, but it suits his biases. Most mass shooters aren’t right-wing terrorists. If he’s only talking about the ones who are…there’s really only been a handful of them in the U.S., ever. And they don’t all believe the same things, or collaborate together. The jokes about “high scores” and body counts on some of the internet’s nastier sites are indistinguishable from dark humor, so there’s no way to police them without gutting the 1st amendment. When potential killers DO make credible threats online, someone usually reports them, so there’s actually a practical use for sites that attract sociopaths. They can be monitored.

The only ideology shared by most an outsized number of mass shooters is atheism, frankly, although there are also a fair amount of agnostics, and of course, the Islamic terrorists. There are also a handful with their own bizarre “spiritual” ideas. Almost all share a disdain our outright hatred for Christianity, the worldview of the majority of Americans but only a tiny sliver of mass shooters. If PZ Myers’ rants were consistent he would be asking the CIA to monitor his own site. There have been plenty of mass shooters who repeat his talking points.

  8. Bilbo says:

Isaac: “…so there’s no way to police them without gutting the 1st amendment.”

It looks like we didn’t have a problem doing that before: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2001/sep/10/internetnews.worlddispatch

Isaace: “The only ideology shared by most an outsized number ofmass shooters is atheism…agnostics…Islamic terrorists.

This is the only site I’ve found that goes into detail of the religion of mass shooters. At first, it seems to support Isaac’s claims. But when you look at the details, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the religion is not mentioned. So I think it is reasonable to doubt the reliability of Isaac’s claims, based on this site. If there is another site that provides the missing information, I’d like to see it.

Has anyone looked into the relationship of mass shooters with their fathers? I can imagine that being a more directly influential aspect than religion.

  11. Kevin says:

In that case, did he have a point?

I’m not familiar with any of the “chans”, so this is pure speculation. IF 8chan was a popular hangout for violent people, and IF it was shown that 8chan influenced people to commit acts of violence, and IF 8chan had no other legitimate purpose other than promoting and celebrating violence, then sure a conversation could be had about shutting them down, in the same way child pornography is not protected speech due to the direct harm involved. But just being unpopular, politically incorrect, or having tasteless humor would not be enough, I’d think.

Of course, PZ wants to shut down anyone who disagrees with him, up to and including imprisonment, so if he wants something done, I’m inclined to disagree with him even if I know nothing about the subject, so I’ll at least have a chance at picking the right thing.

  12. Bilbo says:

Hi Kevin, I didn’t know anything about 8chan, either, so I skimmed the Wikipedia article:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/8chan

I’m inclined to think that unmoderated message boards bring out the worst in us. So yeah, given two alternatives between moderation and no moderation, I think shutting down 8chan is a good idea.

I don’t read PZ Myers’ stuff very often, so I don’t know if I would agree or disagree with most of it. Mike Gene follows him closely and posts a lot of his stuff that makes atheists look bad. Maybe all of PZ Myers’ stuff makes atheists look bad. I wouldn’t know. But I’m inclined to think he has a point about 8chan.

  13. TFBW says:

For pity’s sake, don’t take Wikipedia’s word about anything remotely political. And yes, that includes 8chan and anything else which is a safe haven for politically incorrect ideas.

PZ Myers: “Until law enforcement, and the media, treat these shooters as part of a terrorist movement no less organized, or deadly, than ISIS or Al Qaeda, the violence will continue.”

It looks like the Dayton killer is an Antifa sympathizer who sounds a lot like PZ.

  15. Kevin says:

The world would be a better place if PZ shut down his blog, but I would never demand it happen.

On the other hand, we as a society need to develop a much higher disapproval of the dehumanizing rhetoric that is now so common in political discourse. PZ is quite guilty of that.

  16. Bilbo says:

    TFBW,

Would the NYT do, or must it be strictly from Fox?

  17. TFBW says:

Look, I stand by my statement regarding Wikipedia, and I’ll cite you a statement from its co-founder to back me up if you like. As regards shutting 8-chan down on the basis that it has legal but unsavoury speech on it, you are quite entitled to your opinion. Just don’t get the impression that it’s complete anarchy: the current operators cooperate with law enforcement to hand over any relevant information any time something like this happens. Perhaps you prefer a slightly more pro-active use of the ban-hammer. Most people do, so long as the person wielding the ban-hammer is ideologically aligned with them.

You have to do your own research here. When a killer is atheist, it’s rarely presented as such by most reporting. At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, the ONLY way I learned that most mass shooters are anti-Christian and atheist was by individually searching for each killers’ own writings and ideas, in their own words. I used Wikipedia’s list of most deadly shooters (starting with the most deadly and working down) and meticulously only looked for evidence of what the shooter actually believed (not the fact that he once went to a church dance or some such nonsense.) The results were quite shocking.

Here are the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history, with Columbine as the cutoff date:

    1. LAS VEGAS (atheist)
    2. ORLANDO (Islamic)
    3. VIRGINIA TECH (atheist)
    4. SANDY HOOK (atheist)
    5. SPRINGS CHURCH (atheist)
    6. PARKLAND (atheist/agnostic)
    7. SAN BERNARDINO (Islamic)
    8. COLUMBINE (atheist)
    9. JIVERLY WONG (unknown)*
    10. FORT HOOD (Islamic)
    11. NAVY YARD (Buddhist)
    12. 1000 OAKS (probable atheist)*
    13. AURORA (agnostic)
    14. GENEVA (unknown)*
    15. PITTSBURGH SYNAGOGUE (Christian)
    16. MARK BARTON (Jehovah’s Witness)
    17. RED LAKE (atheist)
    18. ROSEBURG (Satan worshipper)
    19. SANTA FE (atheist)

*Jiverly Wong never mentioned religion in his written statement before his rampage, and his religion is not named or mentioned anywhere. He was a recent Vietnamese immigrant, and thus probably not religious or most certainly not Christian. However, with nothing to go on I describe him as “unknown.”
*There is also no information I can find about the beliefs of the 1000 Oaks killer, who claimed to have committed his crime for no reason. He did mock the “illogical” idea of prayer in his Instagram posts, but that’s not quite enough to DEFINITIVELY call him an atheist.
*There was not one single bit of information I could find on the Geneva shooter’s religion.

PS The El Paso, Dayton, and Garlic Festival shooters are all, almost certainly, atheist, although I suppose new information could still come out, or some of the info about them could prove false. It’s too soon. If I were to update the above list, the Dayton and El Paso shootings would probably be on it.

Interesting list. Would you be interested in writing this up as a guest post I could put on the front page?

In the Blogroll, top right of each OP, there’s “E-Mail Shadow to Light”. Click it, and your e-mail client should open with shadow2light79@yahoo.com in the To: combox. You should be able to send documents as attachments, and presumably Michael will do the necessary to add formatting codes (if you haven’t) so long as your text is WYSIWYG.

Isaac > Here are the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history, with Columbine as the cutoff date: …

You should see the size of the one that got away:

… [the cops] … They say the podiatrist was plotting a series of attacks on Islamic targets in Florida. Investigators found a scrupulously detailed, three-page “mission template” with a schematic plan for the first bombing. The objective: “Kill all ‘rags’ at this Islamic Education Center.”

Goldstein did seem ready to kill. Authorities seized 20 live bombs, two light rockets, a .50-caliber sniper rifle, an assortment of assault rifles and 25,000 rounds of ammunition. They also found a typed list of some 50 Islamic worship centers across the Sunshine State.

    https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/intelligence-report/2002/podiatrist-wife-arrested-anti-muslim-bomb-plot

(2002, Jewish) That looks like a near-miss of one heck of a mass murder spree..

  25. Isaac says:

Wow. Ok, first of all, thank God they were caught.

Secondly, if this had actually happened, and most of the deaths were by bomb, how does the media spin this? I’m thinking, completely ignore the Jewish angle and just call the killer “white.”

Third, this is a great example of yet ANOTHER poorly understood wrinkle in this rash of mass shootings. White and right-wing mass shooters are…how shall I put this…more likely to…”succeed” when they scheme these atrocities. In terms of preparation, planning, and results. There are LOTS of left-wing would-be mass shooters who set out to commit historically deadly mass shootings and just completely failed, though not for lack of trying.

There’s this bozo, who tried to kill dozens of conservatives and only injured one person before being tackled by a security guard: https://www.frc.org/newsroom/southern-poverty-law-center-linked-to-frc-shooting-in-chilling-new-interrogation-video

And the clown who wanted to massacre Republican congressmen, but only succeeded in crippling Steve Scalise: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/06/14/illinois-suspect-va-shooting-raged-against-trump-republicans/102846780/

And the Left-wing professor who’s murder rampage ended at 3 because her gun jammed:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Alabama_in_Huntsville_shooting#Shooter

And the crazy Bahai vegan PETA member who tried to commit a mass shooting at Youtube headquarters, and only successfully murdered herself. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YouTube_headquarters_shooting

In other words, the list of deadliest mass murders would have more Left-wing terrorists on it if Antifa-types weren’t so generally bumbling and effeminate. They’re trying their best.
