Nightmares About Covid

Atheist PZ Myers is so terrified by Covid that he is actually having nightmares about it:

I dreamt that the omega variant had come along, there was mass death everywhere, including my wife and I. Our floppy, decaying bodies were flung into a mass grave, and then her corpse rolled away from mine and we were separated by piles of dead strangers. The end. That’s when I woke up at 4am deep in the slough of despond and have spent the day stumbling through a grey world.

Do you think he also wet the bed?

If we stick to reality, the current variant seems to kill about 0.2% of the people it infects (according to current 7-day averages). And as we know by now, those 0.2% are likely to have other health issues going on. I personally have no problem being exposed to Omicron, a strain that rarely infects the lungs. It doesn’t make me sick and it continually boosts my immunity. After all, antibodies against Omicron work against the other variants we know of.

I slept peacefully last night.

He’s not scared of covid. He is afraid to die.
He knows there are two options.
    1. He is right, and his life was meaningless.
    2. He was wrong and will spend eternity in Hell.
No, there is not a third option he will consider.

And he doesn’t *really* believe that option, as witness:

==”Our floppy, decaying bodies were flung into a mass grave, and then her corpse rolled away from mine and we were separated by piles of dead strangers.“==

  4. There’s a reason why atheism is only really a thing in comfortable, industrialised societies, and it’s not because the rest of the world is silly and superstitious. It’s because the rest of the world don’t have the option of pretending death doesn’t exist.

If he ‘trusted the Science’ he wouldn’t be so afraid.

Maybe he’d watched CONTAGION before he went to sleep, or perhaps Fukasaku’s FUKKATSU NO HI (which is based on a novel where a man-made virus decimates the human population).

Hmmm…that’s a pretty interesting take. Frankly, when it comes to the “New Atheism”, all I saw were a bunch of people from comfortable societies rejecting religion–but also putting themselves on pedestals while tossing off insults about others who they considered lesser because they were not from their world/way of life.

Personally, I’d find it damn inconvenient, but if it happens, it happens.
