Let me provide some evidence that greatly strengthens Maher’s point about the trendiness of being LGBT.
Here is a breakdown of the survey results from the Gallop poll in 2021.
Notice anything? There are modest increase in the % of Generation Z and Millenials who claim to be gay, lesbian, or trans. Where the numbers skyrocket are with the bisexuals. In fact, it’s clear that the bulk of the increase in the number of LGBTs talked about by Maher come from the bisexuals. For example, going from Generation X to Z involves a 2-fold increase in the number who identify as gay, but a 7.5-fold increase in the number who identify as bisexual. Or consider the difference between Millenials and Generation Z. While there is only as 0.3% increase in the number who claim to be gay, there is a 9% increase in bisexuals. That’s a 30-fold difference!
I find this to be incredibly significant. Among all the letters of the LGBTQ rainbow, it is the easiest to lie about being a “B.” You can be a young heterosexual woman who has been in a stable relationship with a man for years, even to the point of thinking about marriage. Yet you could still easily claim to be a bisexual and not be challenged. Just insist you had a relation with another girl when you were younger. Or insist that you find yourself attracted to certain women, but since you are with a man, you would not cheat. Etc. Any attempt to challenge your claims can be shouted down as “homophobia.”
So why is it that the number who identify as bisexual have experienced the greatest increases with each generation? Is it because bisexuals have always received the full brunt of the anti-LGBTQ attacks and are finally feeling freed? Or is it because younger generations find it increasingly desirable to be part of the pool of victimized LGBTQs and it’s easiest to join by just claiming to be bisexual?
BTW, Maher is also spot on about something. When it comes to far left, progressive parents, they actually want a trans kid of their own. It gives them status with their woke friends and co-workers. My guess is that Maher has experienced this in his circle of lefty friends and that is the whole motivation for this talk.

These results will be queered by natal males self-identifying as females and natal females self-identifying as males. Read the figures with a dose of awareness, caution and skepticism: here, males and females are not what they were born as but what they currently claim to be.
At first sight the figures for Gay and Lesbian differ markedly between Gallup’s (self-identified as) Male and Female; but:
I notice that if you add together Gay + Lesbian you get:
(Self-identified as) Male : 2.3%
(Self-identified as) Female: 2.1%
I notice that if you add together Gay + Lesbian + Transgender you get:
(Self-identified as) Male : 3.1%
(Self-identified as) Female: 3.2%
I notice that if you add together Gay + Lesbian + Transgender + Other you get:
(Self-identified as) Male : 3.5%
(Self-identified as) Female: 3.4%
Take whichever set of figures you wish, these are remarkably similar figures. What (eg) a natal male (“woman”) attracted to a cis-gender woman declared to Gallup as their sexual orientation, that’s anybody’s guess and possibly their own, too, it’s probably that 1.9% Lesbian figure. It’s Bisexual that’s the outlier.
